My name is Konrad Zych. I am a PhD Candidate at Groningen Bioinformatics Centre, department of the University of Groningen (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen or just RUG). That means, I am currently living in Groningen, lovely city in the northern Netherlands.
However, I am not Dutch. I am Polish and I obtained both Master and Bachelor of Science degrees in Biotechnology at Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow.
In theory I should be a molecular biologist/ biotechnologist and work in a wet lab. That did not happen, not only because I could not stand pipetting, but also because I got seduced by bioinformatics. During my BSc research, I was preparing quite beautiful visualizations of lipid bilayers and small peptides than interact with them. At the beginning of my MSc study I went for an Erasmus exchange to GBIC and got really interested in concepts like QTL mapping, Genetical Genomics or Association Studies (including (in)famous GWAS).
Nowadays I am working on potato genomics. The potato is quite an intriguing plant. It is widely cultivated, its genetics is complex and little is known about it! I hope to change that! You can get to know my research more in the Research section of the website.
In addition to my research, I am also an (amateur) freelance graphic designer and a conference lover!
